The difference between private label and contract manufacturing
The two concepts are often used interchangeably. Contract manufacturing generally means the manufacturer produces according to a product definition set by the brand; in private label, the manufacturer may let a brand offer, under its own name, product options within the manufacturer’s development capability. In practice the two models can overlap.
| Topic | Contract manufacturing | Private label |
|---|---|---|
| Product definition | Usually comes from the brand | May also be shaped from the manufacturer’s options |
| Formula | May be brought by the brand or developed together | Determined with manufacturer support |
| Rights and responsibility | Clarified in the agreement | Clarified in the agreement |
The table is a general framework; not every agreement should be assumed to be the same. For ARK İlaç ve Kozmetik’s approach, see the private label section.
Sequential steps for planning
- Define the target audience and brand language.
- Decide your product range: start with one product or a line?
- Choose the formulation approach: existing formula, joint development or supported development.
- Take packaging decisions together with product texture and brand positioning.
- Clarify estimated quantity and market expectations.
- Put rights, confidentiality and sample terms in writing.
The product range decision
Rather than planning many products in the first project, starting with one or two products that best express your brand’s identity can make management easier. For product lines, fragrance, color and packaging consistency should be planned separately.
Formulation and packaging
The formulation decision determines the product’s texture and user experience; packaging determines how it stands on the shelf. The two should not be handled independently. For formulation support, see our formulation and R&D page.
Managing expectations
- There is no guarantee of earnings or sales results; a product plan is a production process.
- Formula ownership is not transferred automatically; it must be written into the agreement.
- Document and testing scope should be clarified per product.
Frequently asked questions
Who owns the formula of a private label product?
That is a matter for the agreement. Automatic transfer should not be assumed; it should be defined in writing.
Can I start with a single product?
Yes, starting with one or two products often makes the plan easier.
Do I supply the packaging?
That also varies by project; responsibility for packaging supply should be clarified at the start.
